During junior high, our home room period would begin with Channel One news updates from around the world. The station was a welcome distraction from battling morning wood, presenting valuable awareness beyond my suburban Ohio region. The true highlight of this morning segment was the thick, dabbling bass and sliding riffs of “Cannonball” opening up each show. I didn’t realize it until a few years later, but that track was the heavy hitter of The Breeders album, Last Splash. It’s a tome of the 1990s finest indie rock.

KELLEY
Riding out the wave of their 20 year anniversary of their Last SplashThe Breeders returned to the Paradise Rock Club last night. With a warm greeting, they slid into the first half of their set playing Last Splash from beginning to end in chronological order. Fellow Ohioans, the Deal sisters (Kim and Kelley) led the Dayton crew with Kim’s soft voice whispering assertively through the crowd’s ears. Remaining true to the recording, they brought an arsenal of guitars and switched instrument roles on various songs. Into the second half of the set, post Splash, they surprised the emphatic audience with tracks including Boston’s Tanya Donelly, an early member of the band. The show was wrapped up with a new track, one of their most lush, layered songs “Walking With a Killer?”

It was a gratifying evening to bring my Breeders love full circle.
