FAVORITE NEW RELEASE/TRACK/MIX: Without a doubt my favorite Boston record (or damn near anywhere else) of 2013 is Fat History Month‘s Bad History Month. No one does it quite like Fat History Month. The freakishly tight, yet insanely loose, duo have made a genuine classic.
The album is magical and you really can’t find better lyrics these days.
FAVORITE FRESHMAN: Are Krill too old for this? Probably, though I pick them if I can. I recently got to hear their upcoming album and it’s incredible. Krill forever … just wait. If I can’t pick them then I have to go with Chandeliers. Their first EP, Bigshot Weekend, was filled with rough post-punk and math rock and Monday continues to rip and amaze.
FAVORITE LOCAL MUSICIAN: This is like asking me to pick my favorite kid (and not being a shitty parent who doesn’t like one of their kids). I love Pile, Grass Is Green, Fat History Month, and so many others on a real serious level. Grass Is Green may have been the first to truly blow my mind all them years ago … so we can say them if you want.
Oh, and they’re still doing it today too.
FAVORITE MEMORY FROM BOSTON SCENE: One of the best house shows I ever attended (long live house shows, screw the cops) was Pile, Fat History Month, Bunny’s A Swine, Kal Marks, and Royal Blood at The Hen House. I didn’t know any of the bands personally at the time and the entire thing didn’t get started until like 10 pm or something late like that, running well into the early hours of the next day. I remember Fat History Month had gotten a parking ticket and were seeking some funds. It was amazing.
FAVORITE RESIDENT: Not entirely sure I get this question, but I’m going to pick Pile drummer/extraordinaire Kris Kuss. Love that guy. If we’re talking veteran bands: Mission of Burma, Pixes, Cave In, Clouds, Disappearer, Swirlies … all that great stuff.
MOST LIKELY TO BLOW UP: Pile. You can’t make records as good as they do without people taking notice. Just when you think they couldn’t possibly get any better… damn.
